Fogo, the “Island of Fire”, is one big volcano rising out of the Atlantic. At its heart is Pico do Fogo, which at 2,829 metres is the highest point in Cabo Verde and one of the few active volcanoes you can climb with a local guide. Its last eruption, in 2014–2015, sent lava flowing across the crater floor, and the black lava fields it left behind are still there to walk across today.
Inside the huge crater lies Chã das Caldeiras, a village where families have rebuilt their homes and farms on the volcano’s slopes. Grapes, apples, figs and pomegranates grow in the dark volcanic soil, and the grapes become Fogo’s famous wines, which you can taste straight from the people who make them.
Down on the coast, the island’s capital São Filipe is known for its colourful colonial houses, cobbled streets and cliff-top views towards the island of Brava. In the green north, around Mosteiros, coffee grows on steep hillsides, and quiet villages keep the island’s rural way of life alive.
Whether you want to reach the summit at sunrise, hike across lava fields, taste volcanic wine or simply drive the winding roads between the mountains and the sea, our local guides will show you the Fogo that most visitors never see.

Climb the highest peak in Cabo Verde (2,829 m) with a certified local guide. We start early from Chã das Caldeiras and follow the steep volcanic trail to the crater rim, with views over the whole island and, on clear days, the neighbouring islands. The way down is a fun run through soft volcanic sand. Good fitness and hiking shoes are required.

Walk across the giant crater of Fogo Natural Park, past the 2014–2015 lava flows and the small volcanic cones around Pico Pequeno. Meet the people of Chã das Caldeiras, who rebuilt their village and farms on the volcano, and learn how they live in one of the most unique landscapes in the world.

Fogo is the home of Cabo Verde’s best-known wines, made from grapes grown in pure volcanic soil at over 1,600 metres. Visit a local winery in the crater, see how the wine is produced and taste the island’s red, white and rosé wines, along with local goat cheese.

Discover how farmers grow vines, fruit and beans on the black slopes of Pico do Fogo with almost no rain. Walk between the vineyards with the volcano towering above you, learn traditional farming methods and, in season, help with the grape harvest.

A full day around the island with pick-up at your hotel. Drive the winding mountain roads from the coast up to the crater, stop at the best viewpoints, explore the colonial houses and cobbled streets of São Filipe and enjoy lunch with local food. The best way to see all of Fogo in one day.

Explore the green north-east of Fogo, where the clouds bring rain and the hills are covered in plants and coffee trees. Walk old cobbled roads through rural villages around Mosteiros, visit a coffee plantation and taste Fogo’s famous coffee, grown on the slopes of the volcano.

Follow Fogo’s wild coastline, where lava met the Atlantic and created cliffs, black stone beaches, natural rock arches and sheltered pools. Enjoy the ocean views, take a swim in calm natural pools when the sea allows and end the day watching the sunset over the neighbouring island of Brava.

Taste the fruits that grow in the crater of Fogo: grapes, apples, figs, quince and pomegranates. Visit family farms in Chã das Caldeiras, pick fruit in season and try homemade products such as fruit liqueurs, jams and goat cheese made by local producers.
